Lesson 1

Just to revise the concept of ESP, let's watch this video to also, learn about the role of an ESP teacher.

You can play the subtitles to read his answer

Think about the advantage/advantages he mentions, just to have this in mind when the time to prepare your lessons comes.

Now let's listen to Jeremy Day explaining the role of an ESP teacher and his first experiencies. Pay attention mainly to minute 7:14 when he tells a funny first lesson for ESP legal matters.

These were some key points he mentions when interviewed:

  • You should speak to your students before, during and after the course and you can learn a lot about the subject matter and your students
  • You don't need to be an expert, you just need to be confident and talking to your students helps you a lot in both ways: expertise and confidence.
  • You need to be prepared for the lessons, anticipate needs and problems, have a lot of reading background.
  • You should know that students have some prevoius knowledge from university, and that they can count on dictionaries if they want to know a new word BUT it's the role of a teacher to focus on communication skills and life skills to activate the language, learning stragegies and learning techniques, etc.

Think about his idea: a good teacher who knows something about the field, it's better than an expert who doesn't know much about teaching.

  1. Analysis
The book is named “English for Cabin Crew” written by Terence Gerighty, with the collaboration of Shon Davis. Nick Sheard is the publisher of this book.
“English for Cabin Crew” is a course book specially designed for flight attendants in a regular day at work. It is equally suitable for those already working in the industry that needs to improve their communications skills when carrying out their pre and in-flight responsibilities.
The level of the book is oriented for those students who are in Level B1, B2.
 Level B1 means: the ability to express oneself in a limited way in familiar situations and to deal in a general way with non-routine information.
 Level B2 means: the capacity to achieve most goals and express oneself on a range of topics.
I think that we have to take into account the different groups we are going to deal with. According to this, the time to develop and finish the book is going to be always different. If we have a large group of students we are going to need more time, if we are teaching one-to-one student the time needed is less.
    The student’s book is organized into 3 sections;
    1. Units 1 to 10; follow the routine stages of any flight.
    2. Case studies; present real incidents involving passenger experiences and the actions of the cabin crew.
    3. Self-study; provides additional practice exercises for independent study.
The book is useful to improve fluency and pronunciation, to build new vocabulary and expressions, to develop listening skills. This book can be implemented in group teaching, one-to-one student or self-study. The emphasis is place on ordinary situations, helping the learner to understand passengers need.
I considered the book “English for Cabin Crew” is great. It is a complete and well developed book, which it can help flight attendants to express them and to acquire fluency on the language they are learning. The book also allows teachers to recreate spontaneous dialogues or situations which the learners are going to deal with in the future.
Besides all these, the book also has a special unit for those learners who want to keep on improving their language by having extra practice.

This book is called "English for pharmaceutical industry" and it was written by Michaela Bucheler, Kathy Jaehning, Gloria Watzing and Tanya Weindler. Oxford university press is the publisher of the book.
"English for pharmaceutical industry" has been specifically developed for people who need to communicate effectively in English in the pharmaceutical industry. The book will equip learners with the linguistic skills and specialist vocabulary necessary to undestand daily situations in a work environment.
English level: intermediate, and the book is adressed to professions such as human resourses, or marketing and advertising, and work skills such as telephoning, meetings, and presentations.
The course can be completed in 25-30 hours. Apart from this, I think that the time used to teach and develop all the skills to the students depends on the amount of learners they are.
"English for pharmaceutical industry" consists of six units and covers the full process of drog development.
Unit 1: introduces topics specific to the field.
Unit 2: deals with medical research and development.
Unit 3: covers quality control and auditing.
Unit 4: looks at the various phases of trials, and then moves on to drug safety and regulatory requirements in unit 5.
The final unit deals with drug manifacture and packaging. The units are presented in a logical sequence.
The book is the ideal quick course for anyone who needs English to communicate with colleages and contacts in the pharmaceutical sector. It can be used to supplement a regular coursebook, on its own, as a stand-alone intensive specialist course, or for self-study. Whichever part of the industry you work in.
It seems to me this book is excellent because it deals with realistic work scenarios in which new technical knowledge and associated language skills can be communicated. It also involves listening exercises, test yourself and answer key for independent study. To me, it is a well-developed book. By Karla Schinner

  3. The name of the book that I had to be analyzed is “English for Customer Care”, written by Rosemary Richey, and its publisher is OXFORD University Press. The main theme of this book is “Customer Care”. Moreover, the level required to use this course book is B2, and is addressed for people who working in customer service and need a good level of English whether in person, over the phone, or in writing. For example, you might be working in the sales or customer service department of a company, or you might have direct contact with customer in a bank or hotel. Or perhaps you speak to customers on the telephone from a helpdesk or a call centre. Besides, English for customer care consists in 6 units; the first unit offers an introduction, the following four deal with various different forms of customer contact (face to face meetings, telephone calls, etc.); and the final unit presents speaking skills that are needed in order to solve problems. With this in mind, this book could work over a period of 2 months, with three times classes a week, for two hours each class. Apart from that, each unit begins with small exercises, brainstorming activities, or a quiz; this followed by dialogues, texts, and authentic documents, along with a variety of exercises that help you to learn the vocabulary and expressions in context; you will be directed to the partner files at various points in the units, where role-play information gap activities allow you and a partner to practice the language presented in the unit in realistic situations. Each unit ends with a text which relates to the topic of the unit and leads to discussion. We can notice clearly the four skills (reading, speaking, writing and listening) are worked with this course book. In my opinion, English for Customer Care is an ideal short course for those who need to communicate with customers effectively and politely in English, over the phone, in person, or in writing.
English for Customer Care is suitable for people who have direct contact with customers in a variety of contexts, including hotels, banks, helpdesks and call centers. Students learn the language skills, professional techniques, and specific strategies they need to communicate successfully in English with customers. Each unit of English for Customer Care addresses the different forms of customer contact, such as face to face meetings, telephone calls, and written communication. The final unit presents the skills needed to solve problems and deal with customer complaints effectively. By Mayra Benegas

  4. The book analysed is named ´´English for Telecom and Information Technology´´. Its authors are Tom Ricca-McCarthy and Michael Duckworth and the publisher of the book is Oxford.
``English for Telecoms and Information Technology´´ is an ideal book for students in employment, who want to communicate better in English. The purpose of the book is for people who work with technology and need English so as to communicate in a variety of situations with colleagues or clients.
The level of the course is from Intermediate to Advanced students that mean that the book is addressed to students aged from 21 years old onwards.
Concerning the time I would take to finish the book, it would depend on the number of students. It is advisable to work with a small group of learners in order to be more dynamic and take advantages of the course.
The skills that this book deals with are: listening, writing and reading.
To conclude, I consider that this book is well-developed to those students who want to learn or improve their English in order to communicate with people in different situations concerning the field of Technology.
